Part 2 : How User Generated content / UGC have changed the way i view and understand mainstream tradition tv?

User Generated Content has been referred to any types of content like blog post, videos, pictures, tweets that has been put up by any users on to their social media account. The UGC is more of using their followers or audience to promote their certain brand, instead of the brand company promoting its brand by itself.

user-generated-content-600.jpg.430x0_q85

This method have been proven effective, even though majority of the followers of the brand are being unpaid, they have been helping to promote the brand mostly via sharing photos of the brand. UGC can be anywhere as social medias are commonly used in this modern age while traditional advertising on TV are only when commercial breaks in between shows. One of the examples that are being widely posted are Starbucks & Coffee Bean as majority coffee lovers tends to take picture of their buys and post it on their social media with hashtags, celebrities especially Korean idols attract more attentions on their social medias, therefore people who are following their social medias are able to see more often of the certain brand.

UntitledUntitled2

I feel that UGC has more freedom for social media users to express their views and concerns on sharing and discussing certain topics that are not suitable and will be censored in traditional tv. Audience are now able to know two sides of the stories from social media instead of being fed by one side from traditional tv, for example government news on traditional tv will be more likely to be reported one sided, more advantages to the government. With UGC, audiences should have the ability to choose and know the information they intake are credible and reliable as some users might be making up some stories just for viewing rates.

Both UGC and traditional tv have their own pros and cons, however in my personal view, UGC is more efficient in this modern era, be it as public sphere for anyone to spill out their opinions and discussions on any topics or as advertisement on any brands

My group decided to create a subvertisement poster on 3 different advertisements instead of focusing on just one advertisement. All 3 advertisements represent and gives off different meaning ; physical superficial, beauty and money, false reality. These  will make people deluge in some areas where they usually only see the outer surface of it, for example the first advertisement is about changing girls perspective views on the body of the guys, therefore my group decide to slam it back as it is too appearance superficial to just look at the fit tight abs body and showing examples of what if the guys have good shape body but not good looking faces.

Part 2

What is public sphere?

Public sphere is believe to be an place or area that is unrestricted or not controlled by anyone where eavesdropping is everywhere and enable people to gather around to chat, discuss and criticize certain sensitive things among themselves like society and government/political.

Mediated public sphere!

As the world progress, public sphere have also move to digital media world, Youtube has become one of the big public sphere for people all around the world to discuss politics and world wide affairs of almost any countries without facing any consequenes.

USA has become one of the common country to be discuss of their affairs like elected president for example Donald Trump being elected as the latest US president that resulted in alot of discussing and comments from all around the world. The following video discuss the reasons on whether will Donald Trump be a good president, but in the comment section, there are alot of people who gives their views and some debates going on.

In the comment section of the video, there are debates and discussions on whether Donald Trump will be a good president, and there are alot of different views and comments from other people

Therefore i feel that Youtube has become common but big public sphere where many popular media text will be trend and found. Society problems like world affairs around the world have videos commonly upload on to youtube, it allows people to freely discuss and share their thoughts on the incident together with people from any other country, debating and some critizism, however there are no consequnces even if the person talk bad about the company or government in his comment, it is a free open critical discussions

Does it matter who owns the media?

Nowadays in this modem era, media is so common everywhere that is used for mass communicating with people all around the world, i felt that media can be a scary tools that influence people and change their belief on certain things.

jim-morrison-quote-on-media-control-500x238

In my personal opinion, i definitely feel that it matters alot on who owns the media, especially when it concerns a country and running a country, it comes to Government vs Private company. Singapore has strict censorship that are owned by Government alone, but there are some Singaporeans feeling that they have been stripped off from their freedom of speech, and tend to go against this rule to make it more “democratic” like in the western countries like America, however what these Singaporeans doesn’t know are the consequences of the freedom of speech. I personally feel that they are just blinding believing in freedom of speech without knowing why Singapore tends to have strict censorship on certain sensitives stuffs.

Firstly, Singapore can be so safe even though we are the smallest in the world, partly thanks to the strict censorship that helps to prevent conflicts. The media in Singapore shows and bring out our Singaporean bonding and spirit to unite together against others that are a threat instead of internal conflict. We respect and support each other even we are from difference races and harmony is what we emphasis in Singapore especially we have quite many difference races around us. We have to admit that when it comes to different races bonding, Singapore is consider the top due to our racial harmony.

Secondly, the strict censorship helps to government to control panic and fear in case of false news being spread throughout the world / in the country.  This is really essential in Singapore since Singaporeans are easily panic when there are huge news that break out, for example war, to stabilize a country  and stand firmly even when facing emergency break out, first of all the government have to stop the citizens in the country from panic.

Thirdly, as Singapore is the smallest country out there, security measures and defenses are totally important for us to defend ourselves against other countries and terrorists around the world like Isis, but its because of our strict censorship, it is impossible for them to find any information on our county security. I used to be on Intelligence department during my Army days, and they are real strict when it comes to security, all are classified with strict monitoring.

If compared to other countries like Finland where i done some research on, Finland media are mostly owned by private company and their government had total less than 50% control of the media, Citizens of Finland are given the rights for free speech, the right of assembly, and the right to publish uncensored texts or pictures. However racism and plagiarism were seen and common at their media, private company can also make exaggerating claims about their products just to attract people to notice and buy their products, this is dangerous since the products might not be as good as they claim or the products might include some dangerous ingredients that might be harmful to humans.

Therefore, although there are disadvantages to strict censorship, however i feel that Government owning the media in Singapore with strict censorship is necessary to keep the country safe and  well progress.

The‘Uses and gratifications’ research asks what and how do people make used of the media

  1. Research and explain in your own words what a uses and gratifications research would look for.

In this modern era where technology is advanced and available everywhere, more and more people are getting used to the media for their entertainment like watching shows/movies online, playing online games and using the search engine to search any questions anywhere anytime. Even the older generations like our parents or even grandparents are getting custom to use the new technology and i have seen many of the elderly are totally familiar with the usage of media.

After much reading and researching, i found out that the uses and gratifications would look to understand Why does people nowadays turn to media for their entertainmentWhat media can give to the people, What is the needs of the people for media and How media can provide entertainment and satisfy the needs to the people / audiences.

In order to look into these questions, it is essential to use the theory of Uses and Gratifications, that stats that people are being categorized into 5 different groups for their different uses and gratifications of the media.

  • Cognitive needs
  • Affective needs
  • Personal integrative needs
  • Social integrative needs
  • Tension free needs

2. Cite one example of ways how‘lobby’ groups make use of a particular readings of images to make an argument or stand.

Firstly, Lobby groups refer to a group of people like an interest group, coming together to influence certain issues and actions especially on Politics

World Animal Foundation was formed by animal lovers as an non profit organisation to help preserve the animals in the planet from abusing, human activity threats, endangered species and certain environment issues.

Groups like World Animal Foundation would come together and make a firm stand and statements to the their own local Government or to other countries involved, asking to free the animals or close down the places like Zoo if the groups happened to see such images/videos from media, articles or situation related about animals being treated badly in other counties, therefore the group will try to argue and influence their local Government in supporting them by helping to negotiate with the involved company or country to do what’s best for the animals.

What is wrong with the ‘media effects’ model? and What are some interesting questions to ask about the role of the media today?

Second Blog Post

twitter-cartoon

Question: What is wrong with the ‘media effects’ model?

According to David Gauntlett’s article on media effects, there are ten things wrong with the media effects model. However i will only be stating a few that i feel essential and important. Most of the points in the media effects model are based on assumptions, one sided views and selective.

1) Whenever there is cases on violence, murder, crime or any big negative impact happening in the society, majority will start to pinpoint to media influence over these people as the first conclusion that make them for committing such acts

2) Majority of the research / experiment are done based on children instead of adults, this is one sided since to have a fair comparison research, there should be a group of children and adults to show the results of similarity and differences in the 2 groups

3) The media effects model select and amplify the “effects” of violence in news or television drama / movies, it make a big issues of it to shows that violence is being promoted widely in the media and therefore able to influence people as majority people are using media nowadays which can easily access and seen these “violence” that can change their thinking, however it did not state/show the after effects or consequences of such acts for the perpetrator which is meant to teach people and promoting anti violence with certain consequences widely

I personally feel that majority people will shift the blame to media at the first place whenever there are cases and news about especially children to teenagers committing acts like violence, murder, robbery etc , most probably because media is everywhere and able to access it easily regardless of any age or place, but because children and teenagers are usually on media for long period, many will speculate that all their knowledge, their perspective views on certain things comes from the media, on whatever they are watching on, for example majority people will think that if a teenager committed murder/violence related cases, it is because he watched too much violence movies or show on the media that influence his thinking and perspective views that violence is normal in this reality world. I would like to say that everything has 2 sides, pro and con, you can make use of knowledge to improve and help others or use the knowledge to degrade and harm people, there is no eternity always good and bad, it depends on the user. There are many factors that compliment each other that cause one person to commit acts, therefore i feel that people should not just based on one factor and determined the cause that motivate the person to carry out such crime / acts, like blaming media for everytime some crimes arise in the society

media-manipulation1

Question: What are some interesting questions to ask about the role of the media today?

  1. As the technology become more advance, will the people be over dependent on media?
  2. Majority people find media easy to access and to learn or watch any part of the world by just searching at the search engine, but will this make them uninterested to go out to the world to explore or even to school?

Investigating the Murder of James Bulger (1993)

This Ba Chor Mee 110

Group members: Shanne, Leon, Keisha, Zuo En

Possible factors leading to the brutal murder of James Bulger by Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.

1. Family

– Robert Thompson And Jon  Venables lived with their mother with the absence of their father

– Ann Thompson was portrayed as an incompetent alcoholic, while Susan Venables was painted as a loose woman whose neighbours “noted a procession of men friends for Mrs Venables”.

– Both mother were strict on Jon and Robert in the family respectively

2. Relationship between the boys

– Both Robert and Jon had difficulties with attendance, learning and behaviour at school. They bunked off, they shoplifted, they were violent; all these pieces in a pattern that made up a pair of empty, broken young lives

– Neighbors near of Robert and Jon area reported that they have seen both doing crurl acts on animals likes; pigeons, having their heads shot off with an airgun, of rabbits being tied to railway lines

– Robert and Jon lived and experience in the similar environment and surrounding whereby the period is when the world of social and economic deprivation, of trashy television and cultural poverty, inadequate social services, failed schooling and general confusion

3. Media

Jon’s dad who rented ‘Child Play 3’ film
Many stated that techniques of murder were similar to those found in film, though no evidence was found that both boys had watched…
